Inside The Cube: how we delivered a summer holiday gaming destination
Over the January summer holidays, Ground Zero Gaming delivered The Cube at Elizabeth Quay — a bespoke, free-to-play gaming hub in the heart of the Perth CBD.
Launching on Friday 12 January, The Cube was officially opened by the Hon John Carey BA MLA (State Member for Perth, Minister for Planning; Lands; Housing; Homelessness), welcoming the public into a new kind of community-first gaming space.
On his Facebook page, Minister Carey shared, “At the Cube, Ground Zero Gaming is introducing a fresh and innovative gaming concept offering a daily free-play program of video games tailored for both kids and the big kids at heart (including me!)”
“Ground Zero Gaming is committed to providing a space for gamers to connect, have fun, and experience the latest and greatest in gaming entertainment.” he said.
Built for Perth conditions (and Perth crowds)
Launching on the eve of a four-day heatwave wasn’t exactly the easy option — but The Cube was built for it. Our custom sea container setup was fitted out to handle the elements, keeping equipment (and visitors) comfortable across extreme heat, storms and humidity.
Open for 154 hours over 17 days, The Cube delivered a consistent, safe and welcoming experience for families, tourists, and locals.
What was inside
Visitors could jump into games including Mario Kart, Rocket League, EA FC24, and Super Smash Bros. across Xbox and Nintendo Switch. For those who preferred to watch, we also provided seating, shade, and extra activities like giant Jenga and Connect 4.
Partnering with the local community
The Cube also hosted community “takeover” moments, including:
A Stitch in Time (mental health-focused activation) featuring Jhye Richardson, Greg Hire, and gaming sessions that encouraged connection and conversation
The first StreamPerth community meetup of the year, turning The Cube into a hub for Perth creators and gaming enthusiasts
The Cube formed part of the summer school holiday program organised by CBRE, on behalf of DevelopmentWA and the State Government of Western Australia.
Looking ahead
The Cube is a strong example of how gaming can activate public space — creating a destination that’s engaging, inclusive, and operationally sound.
